Create: 10/07/2017 - 03:33

Weather forecasters as we all know, sometimes miss a forecast or two, especially those that extend very far into the future. This week, they nailed it. On Tuesday and since, we were told there would be T-storms. strong northerly winds and dropping temps in Scott City early Friday evening. Bingo, bingo and bingo.

Mid-season is always tough...

It was Week #5 Friday night across the football lands of Kansas, the (3-1) IRONDUKES were at HOME after an unsuccessful road trip Week #4 to Andale. The Wichita Collegiate Spartans were in town, the evening was perfecto, no wind, nice temps and that sense of community always present on Friday nights at Sellers was intensified several times over as we together grieved and honored the passing of WHS Junior Stephen Jamerson, tragically lost in a motorcycle accident Thursday evening west of Wellington.

The (0-2 in districts) IRONDUKES were on the road, about 4 hours west of here in Ulysses for the 3rd and final week of district play vs the (1-1) Tigers. If Wellington was going to return to post-season play where it's been absent since 2010, it was going to have to not only defeat ULYSSES but do so with at least a 15 point margin. (2-0) Mulvane and (1-1) Winfield were squaring off as well - although close at first, the Wildcats pulled away with their 3rd victory in district play, final score Mulvane 53 Winfield 31.

It was quite an evening on Friday, October 14 at Sellers Park in Wellington. The 2001 4A State Championship football team were guests of honor as they celebrated the 15th anniversary of their title. That team's coach? Linn Hibbs, who just happens to be in his first season at the helm of the Winfield football program. Wellington's Head Coach, Zane Aguilar was one of several current WHS coaches to have either played for or coached with Hibbs in his 14 years with the Iron Dukes.

Game one of district play was decided by one point. Winfield snatched a pivotal overtime win at Wellington on October 14. It was historical night that was destined to go down in Crusader lore no matter the outcome. Former Wellington coaches Linn Hibbs and T.D. Buck are in their first season coaching for Winfield. The 2001 Hibbs-lead Crusader state championship football team was on hand celebrating their 15th anniversary, and was recognized at halftime. Wellington's first year Head Coach, Zane Aguilar was a member of that '01 squad.
