The 15TH ANNUAL KINGMAN EAGLE CLASSIC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT wrapped up on Saturday with the Wellington teams playing earlier in the day than probably most people thought originally they would. Losses on Day #2 (Friday) eliminated the chances for both the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys to make any Championship Game appearances this go-round. The boys have won this tournament "3" times and the girls "4" times since it's beginnings shortly after the turn of the century. Both will have to wait another year to add to the column of successes.

Wellington found themselves on the wrong side of a familiar situation, a double-digit lead and the clock ticking away, with the opposing team playing keep-away with the ball. The Lady-Crusaders experienced their first loss of the year against Paola in the 4A Div. I semi-final game in Salina on March 11.

Wellington has advanced in the 4A, Div. I State Tournament, defeating DeSoto 62-57 on Wednesday. The Lady-Crusaders will play in the next round on Friday at 3 p.m. in Salina against either Paola or Abilene.

Early game jitters were visible for both teams on Wednesday as each tried to make it just another basketball game. Throughout most of the first, the teams traded one and two point leads. But big baskets by Lauryn Snipes and Grace Mitchell helped give Wellington a 16-11 lead headed into the second.

The Wellington Lady-Crusader basketball team boarded a bus headed for Salina and the 4A Div. I State Tournament on Wednesday morning at WHS.

Music was played by the high school pep band, and the entire student body was on hand. Students from Kennedy Elementary even made the trek to WHS to make sure the state send-off was extra awesome.

Wellington will take on DeSoto to open the state tournament at 3 p.m. Listen to the local radio broadcast on local cable channel 5.

Crusaders lose close Sub-State Championship battle

Create: 03/05/2016 - 21:33

In heartbreaking fashion, Wellington lost to Rose Hill in the boys 4A Sub-State Championship game 53-46 on March 5.

Wellington's second and third chance shots weren't falling in the first half. They trailed 14-5 against Rose Hill after one. They did get on the board first, but it was tough going from then on.

At the start of the second, AJ Snipes swished a three from the top of the arch, and the Crusaders began to claw away at the Rocket lead. Snipes would go on to lead the team in scoring, without any buckets in the fourth - more on that later.
