Varsity Squads Off To 1-1 Starts!

The Varsity Crusader Baseball Team begin the season with a win and a loss. The Andale Indians were visiting on Thursday afternoon, under cloudy skies (most of the time), cool and windy conditions, but no rain! 

In Game #1, Wellington jumped out on the Indians 3-0 after 2, and hung onto the margin until the 5th inning. Andale crossed home plate 4 times to take a 1 run lead into the bottom of the inning. The Crusaders responed with 3 more of their own, to regain their lead, now by just 2 runs. The Indians had two more at-bats to remedy their situation but came up short, scoring only 1 in the top of the 7th and final inning, losing to the Crusaders in the opener. The Indians "out-hit" the Crusaders 9-4 but also "out-errored" them 5-3. Great start for the team in red!

Arlis Troutman (0-0) pitched for 4.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs and 2 SO. Cade Fairbanks (1-0), came in, in relief for 1.2 innings, giving up 1 H, 1R and 1 SO. Gage Cunningham relieved Fairbanks for the final 2 outs of the game.

In Game #2, Andale turned the tables early on, leading 2-1 after 1. Both squads remained scoreless for the next 4 innings. In the 6th, both added a run, leaving Andale up 1. Then the 7th and final inning arrived and the flood gates opened for the visiting Indians. In the top of the 7th, Andale crossed the plate 11 times and won the nightcap 14-2. Andale had 7 hits total, Wellington 4. "Error honors" went to the Crusaders this game with 5, Andale had 3.

DeAndre Washington (0-1) was on the mound for the first 6.1 innings, allowing 3 H, 4 R (2 ER), walked 4 and struck out 2. Aaron Schoemann, Gage Cunningham and Braiden Buresh all came in the 7th in relief, giving up 4 hits, 10 runs.

A very strong 3rd, 4th and 5th inning for the Lady Crusaders in their season opener Thursday at Worden Park, lead to a 5 inning run-rule victory over the visiting Lady Indians from Andale, final score 14-4. Wellington had 10 hits and 4 errors to Andale's 4 and 2. Brooke McCorkle (1-0) was on the mound throughout, giving up 4 hits, 4 runs, striking out 4 and walking no one.

In the nightcap, it was tight until the top of the 4th. Andale, up 1-0, lit it up, scoring 7, followed by 2 in the 5th, to claim the eventual 7 inning victory 10-2. Wellington couldn't get their bats going, only 2 hits with 3 errors. Annika DeJarnett (0-1), pitched for 3.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, 6 runs and 1 walk.
