Here's an overview from many of the WMS and WHS sports activities that took place on Monday. The weather was quite nice and the outcomes for our Knights and Crusaders overall - quite good!

The Varsity and Jr. Varsity Lady Crusader softball squads had their season "HOME" openers Monday evening out at Worden Park. Not a bad evening at all weather-wise, a little windy but just warm enough to make it quite bearable for most of the evening. Mixed results from Field #1 and Field #2 action vs the Lady Orioles of Augusta. In the opener, with Madi Lewellen on the mound, the Lady Crusaders suffered numerous errors resulting in a 6 inning win for the visiting team in orange, 15-4. Much like the BOYS over at HIBBS-HOOTEN, the nightcap was going to be the HOME TEAM's to claim and the Varsity Lady Crusaders did just that with Brooke McCorkle on the mound. Down 10-7 in the bottom of the 7th, Wellington touched home plate 4 times and secured the come from behind victory, final score 11-10! Whew! AWESOME!! The Varsity Lady Crusaders are 3-1 on the season and head to Andale on Thursday for make-up action there. (postponed games from WEEK #1 of the season) The JV Lady Crusaders battled hard and came up short in their opener 3-7. No report on the JV nightcap outcome.

Lady Crusaders are now 3-1 on the season!

The WHS Varsity Baseball squad was in action again at HOME on Monday vs Augusta. The boys in red were hungry for a win after the two tough losses on Friday to Collegiate. Down 6-1 in the bottom of the 7th, the DUKES exploded for 5 runs to tie it up and send it into extra innings. The Crusaders and Orioles would battle for supremacy the next 4 innings when unfortunately the flood gates opened for Augusta and a 9 run 11th inning rally put the 3rd "L" of the season on the DUKES. What a battle though - great effort!! Wellington's fortunes would change in the nightcap - the boys in red, a little peeved perhaps from the outcome of GAME 1, took it to the ORIOLES, run ruling them in 5 innings - final score 11-1! Awesome finish!!

Coach Alan Keller reports:
"Except for a couple of matches that should have gone our way, we could have had a 3rd place finish and possibly 2nd at a pretty tough tournament... but instead finished one point behind Maize in 4th place. With Easton Ewy/Collegiate and Andrew Klimiuk/Kapaun MC in the Singles draw, Brock finished about as well as he could in 3rd place with a 8-5 win against Sanders from Maize. Will Long had a hard fought 1st round battle against Foss, a very good player from Kapaun and prevailed 8-4. Physically, that match took its toll in the final where Will ran out of gas and fell to a good young player from Hesston 8-5. Will continues to play very well and gets many accolades from the other coaches for his tenacity and "never give up" mentality. In Doubles, we continue to struggle. I played Jaden Adams/Reece Langford #1 for the first time this season without much success. They finished 6th but could have easily finished 3rd or 4th... and would have if not for so many unforced errors, fundamental mistakes and just giving up too many easy points. I played Carson LeGrand/Jared Oathout at #2 for the first time and they played remarkably well after a few games to adjust to one another. They did a great job getting their serves in, getting to the net and controlling play. They lost a close 2nd match or they would have been playing for 1st and 2nd. As it turned out, they were only able to secure a fourth place finish which pretty good for their first outing."
