WHS Senior Brock Edwards is State 4A Boys Tennis Tournament bound after going 3-1 in Regional 4A action in Pratt both yesterday (THU 05.04.17) and today (FRI 05.04.17). The victory on the season moves Brock's record in singles to 19-8.

This isn't Brock's first trip to Tennis' BIG DANCE. His JUNIOR season in State action in Topeka, Brock beat Kyle Hutley of Parsons 6-4, 7-5. In second round action last year, Brock lost to 3 time defending State Champion Tommy Hunter (Topeka Haydon) 6-0, 6-0. In the consolation bracket, Brock lost to Auggie Lange of Baldwin 9-5 and was eliminated. (Hunter went on to win the 4A Championship last season) - his 4th in a row! (only the 4th person in Kansas history to do that).

Brock's SOPHOMORE  year, he and his doubles partner Tyler Pettegrew made it all the way to State (in Pratt) but failed to place in the top 12. His FRESHMAN year, also a State qualifer, Brock lost to Paul Juesten from Parsons in the first round. A foreign exchange student from Germany, Juesten finished 3rd in the Chanute Regional that year and was a very tough player with a good all-around game. In the consolation bracket, Brock lost to Michael Schiferl from Colby. Schiferl first beat Brock at the Regional Tournament in Pratt the weekend before. Coach Keller had this to say about Brock after his first appearance at STATE as a freshman - "This ended the season for a very promising young freshman who will have much more success on the court in the next 3 years!" Boy, indeed he did, he did indeed and he is not done just quite yet!

Brock's fourth and final appearance at the State 4A Tennis Tournament will be quite a distance from HOME. Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege is hosting the State 4A Tournament this year in Prairie Village (215 Miles)...that action gets underway Friday (5/12) and Saturday (5/13). Brock is the first and only WHS male to qualify for the State Tennis Tournament all 4 years in HS!! AMAZING JOB BROCK!

In opening court action at Pratt on Thursday, #3 seed Edwards downed #14 seed Paul of Ulyssess 6-0, 6-0. He followed that with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over #6 seed Orth of Larned. Ewy of Collegiate proved to be too much for Brock, the #2 seed beating Edwards 6-0, 6-0 placing him in the 3rd place contest vs #5 seed Starbuck from Collegiate. Edwards would take care of business with Starbuck, winning in 3 sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 to secure the 3rd place medal and his fourth trip to the top tourney of the State in as many years. Congratulations Crusader and good luck at Prairie Village - it's been a great journey, dot the i's and cross the t's and bring home some hardware CRUSADER! Wellington is proud of you Brock - GOOD LUCK young man!

Wellington's other singles player, #18 seed Reece Langford
after winning a play-in match with Moral of Ulysses, lost to #6 seed Orth of Larned, 6-3, 5-7 (10-4) and was eliminated. #16 seed doubles partners Jade Adams and Jarod Oathout too went 0-1 and out, losing to #1 seed Murphy/Wheeler of Collegiate 6-1, 6-0 and #6 seeds Carson LeGrand/John Long lost their opener to #18 seeds Clark/Wyse of Hays, 6-4, 6-7 (5), (11-9), they too were eliminated at 0-1.

Here are the TEAM RESULTS overall:

Collegiate 26
Scott City 7
Wichita Trinity 6
Larned 5
Wellington 5
Colby 4
Hays 4
Pratt 0
Ulysses 0

Congrats to all the players for battling tough all season - and again, good luck next weekend Brock - YOUR 4th STRAIGHT YEAR AS A STATE PARTICIPANT!
